About
Blogger & Editor
I’m the News Editor for LinuxJournal.com, the online section of Linux Journal, the original magazine of the Linux community. As the title might suggest, I write news articles, generally a roundup of the day’s events, and add humorous, witty, and tongue-in-cheek catty spin on stories directed at Linux/Open Source users and the general tech audience.
I blogged with Wisebread, a well-known personal finance blog, through December 2007, for the most part on personal finance, savvy living, and lifehacking, with an emphasis on technology and open source software. My writing was regularly featured on top blogs including Lifehacker, The Consumerist, Freelance Switch, Zen Habits, and The Simple Dollar. Due to incompatible licensing, my posts aren’t available on Wisebread any longer, but they’re archived here for your enjoyment.
I was the Managing Editor for an online magazine and community for women, where I oversaw the editorial calendar, managed staff and recruited bloggers, reviewed, edited, and queued posts, and handled other management and site maintenance. I also wrote news and celebrity gossip, one of my favorite parts of the project. I left to focus on other writing and editing projects.
I occasionally guest post for other blogs, and am open to blogging for interesting sites. Interested parties are welcome to contact me.
Writer
I’m a freelance writer, covering a range of topics, including technology, personal finance, news and opinion, and self-improvement. I have experience writing online copy, web design, search optimization, and online advertising; I’ve also worked in creative writing and ghostwriting.
Though much of my writing is published online — the web is the way of the future — I’m open to and exploring opportunities in print.
Other
Before I became a full-time writer, I owned a tech consulting firm that worked with small business; I believe that a lot of small businesspeople are stuck between being their own tech managers, hiring full-time help they can’t afford or keep busy, or being the second-class customers of huge tech firms busy chasing the big fish. From that, and from a bit of other work, I’ve become an experienced online manager, web designer, and technical administrator.
I still do a small amount of consulting, as it’s never good to lose touch entirely, as well as web design. I don’t keep an online portfolio or reference list — there are some really strange people running around on the internet — but I would be happy to talk with anyone interested in starting a project.
I’m a passionate Open Source evangelist, and support a number of Free/Open Source causes: Creative Commons, Mozilla Foundation, Electronic Frontier Foundation, and quite a few more. I’m a Linux geek, and for those who care about such things, I run Ubuntu full-time on all my machines and love it. I’m more than willing to share my thoughts on Linux — and Open Source in general — with anyone who’d like to ask.
Outside of writing, I’m interested in many things: technology (obviously), music, photography, art, fashion & style, literature, and food & wine.

The logo image in the page header is adapted from “Pen” by Chris Gladis, released under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license. As Chris was generous enough to release his work freely, I will keep the chain going by licensing my derivative under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0.
The image of Tux, the Linux penguin used as the favicon is a public domain image; the same image is the base for the pen-and-ink image of Tux in the sidebar. The original Tux was created in 1996 by Larry Ewing using The GIMP, the same tool used to create the pen-and-ink effect.
The type used for the page header is a font set created from the actual keys of an old Remington manual typewriter; I chose it as an homage to all the great writers who spent years crafting masterworks at typewriters just like that one.
The photographs in my gallery are available on Flickr under various licenses; the image page on Flicker can provide specific information about individual photos.
